Mistalocks Profile

Buford G. Collins a.k.a. Mistalocks has been Steppin since 2001 and teaching the art since 2002. Buford, an Analytical thinker, has broken down both 8-count & 6-count methods of instruction to broaden his ability to teach Steppin’. Today, the 8-count system of dance instruction is widely recognized as the most efficient and precise teaching method and is Buford’s best tool.

Known for his meticulous attention to the details of the dance and his reputation of being able to teach students that have been unsuccessful in other classes, he is known to his students and other instructors as “The Technician.” Many of the Tri State area Steppers and Steppin instructors have at one time been trained by Mistalocks’.

Buford is versed in Detroit Ballroom, Detroit Bop, Club Latin Hustle, and general partner dancing techniques.

Buford G. Collins’ vision is to teach the art of Steppin to the masses. He is now on a mission to have his dance studio be Detroit’s best environment for Steppin’ instruction.

“Social dancing is a long tradition of African culture,” says Mistalocks. “Steppin is based on the beat which, like the drumbeat, is a fundamental part of our heritage.  My years studing African Martial Arts has given me a relation with the drum that is passionate.

Buford G. Collins divides his time between Detroit and abroad and is regularly called upon to give workshops on the art of Steppin other groups & organizations.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

• Demonstrates Steppin’, Ballroom, Bop, & Club Latin Hustle dance systems to groups in the Tri-State area
• Has taught with along side with many of Detroit’s top Steppin’ Instructors
• Provides private lessons and private workshops to companies, schools, churches, dance groups and individuals
• Demonstrated Steppin at “the African American Music Festival 2005”
• Finalist in the 2005 V-103's Worlds Largest Steppers Contest 
• AMFF 2006 Annual Steppers Contest Champion, Columbus, Ohio
• Has taught in Detroit, Cleveland, Milwaukee, Flint, Miami, Lakeland & Atlanta
• Currently Full Time Studio Owner.
